For the first time, Australian scientists have used weather radar data to monitor bird migration, revealing millions of birds flying across the continent each year.
Led by University of Queensland Ph.D. candidate Xu Shi, the team analyzed 16 years of radar data from the Bureau of Meteorology to study bird movements from Tasmania to Queensland.
The study, published in Current Biology, uncovered unique migration patterns, with some birds flying by day, unlike their northern hemisphere counterparts.
