A baby girl born deaf has made incredible progress after receiving groundbreaking gene therapy at 11 months old.
Opal Sandy, from Oxfordshire, became the first patient in a global trial and is now able to hear unaided.
Born with auditory neuropathy, a rare genetic condition, Opal’s hearing improved dramatically after a gene therapy infusion to her right ear.
Within weeks, she responded to sounds, and at 24 weeks, she was hearing soft noises like whispers.
Opal can now communicate words like “Dada” and “bye-bye.”
