UK river restoration project declared a triumph for nature

A year after its completion, the UK’s pioneering river restoration on Somerset’s Holnicote estate is being hailed a success.

The project transformed a 1.2km stretch of the river Aller, reconnecting it to surrounding floodplains and creating seven hectares of wetland.

This “Stage 0” restoration aims to boost resilience to extreme weather while benefiting wildlife.

Since completion, the site has endured record rainfall, successfully slowing water flow and reducing flood risks downstream.
