Americans are buying more organic products than ever, according to a recent survey by the Organic Trade Association.
The survey highlights health and environmental concerns as key reasons for this shift.
“People choose organic to avoid pesticides and chemicals,” says Katherine Paul of the Organic Consumers Association.
In 2016, organic product sales hit $47 billion, an 8% increase from 2015.
Organic food sales alone reached $43 billion, making up over 5% of total U.S. food sales. This sector has more than doubled since 2007.
However, supply is struggling to keep up with demand. Organic grain-based food producers saw nearly $1 billion in sales in 2016.
