Innovative floating garden revitalizes NYC’s most polluted canal

For over a century, the Gowanus Canal in New York City has been plagued by severe pollution.

This infamous waterway has faced sewage runoff, industrial waste, and chemical pollution.

It’s so contaminated that the Environmental Protection Agency listed it as a superfund site, with a $500 million cleanup plan set for 2022.

In the meantime, a smaller project is making a big impact. GrowOnUs, a floating garden, is cleaning the canal.

Created by Balmori Associates, this oasis consists of 30 plant species that act as natural sponges, absorbing harmful chemicals.
