Amidst abandoned houses and vacant lots, Harris envisions a vibrant village with small businesses, youth programs, and food production.
She’s starting with the Homework House, a renovated space for after-school tutoring.
Nearby, sports courts and the Goddess Marketplace, made from shipping containers, will provide areas for recreation and women’s small businesses.
Supported by a successful Kickstarter campaign and a $100,000 donation from musician Alex Ebert, Avalon Village will also feature green infrastructure like solar streetlights.
