In an inspiring move, Elkhart Community Schools has joined forces with South Bend-based food rescue, Cultivate Culinary, to ensure children have enough food to eat even on weekends.
The innovative pilot program sees unused cafeteria food transformed into take-home meals for elementary school students.
Jim Conklin from Cultivate Culinary explained, “We rescue food that’s been made but never served by catering companies and large food service businesses like schools.”
The program, supported by the Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Academy, has already made a significant impact, and plans are underway to expand it to more schools.
