Astronomers have discovered a neutron star spinning at an astonishing 716 rotations per second, making it one of the fastest-spinning stars ever observed.

Located 27,400 light-years away in the binary system 4U 1820-30, this star rivals the famous pulsar PSR J1748-2446ad in speed.

Using NASA’s NICER X-ray telescope on the International Space Station, researchers recorded powerful thermonuclear explosions that revealed the star’s incredible speed.
