Norway celebrates success: Arctic coal mining town rebirths as wildlife haven

In a remarkable feat of environmental stewardship, Norway has just completed its most extensive re-wilding project to date on the Arctic island of Svalbard. Once a coal mining hub, the Sveagruva town has been transformed into a pristine wilderness, welcoming back polar bears, reindeer, Arctic foxes, and seabirds.

This monumental effort, funded at a fraction of the budgeted cost, not only restores nature but also exemplifies Norway’s commitment to preserving wilderness. With 7 national parks and 23 nature reserves, Svalbard stands as a shining example of conservation, covering a remarkable 66% of the island.
