Wounded US Army veterans have found a new sense of purpose and camaraderie in saving Florida Keys’ coral reefs. Through a collaboration between Mote Marine Laboratory and Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge, these heroes are restoring the reefs and combating their sense of listlessness.
Under the guidance of Michael Crosby, they plant resilient corals bred to withstand climate changes. This year, 31 veterans planted over 1,000 new corals at Higgs Head, bringing Mote Laboratory’s total to 200,000. Billy Costello, a 41-year-old Army veteran, says the experience has been a blessing, aiding his recovery. It’s a heartwarming mission with real impact.
