Cape Town is set to unveil the world’s tallest hemp-based building, the 12-story Hemp Hotel on 84 Harrison Street. It uses carbon-negative materials, capturing more carbon during production than it emits. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa believes the cannabis and hemp industry could generate 130,000 jobs, with Afrimat Hemp producing the revolutionary “HempCrete” blocks used in the hotel.
Made from South African hemp, these blocks serve corporate clients and contribute to social housing projects. Despite being 20% more expensive than traditional materials, the company sees an opportunity to sell carbon credits, as these eco-friendly structures reduce emissions by 30 tons, equivalent to a mature tree’s lifetime sequestration.
