Greenland’s tourism sector celebrated a significant victory as a new green tax took effect in January, marking a collaborative effort between locals, tourism operators, and the Greenlandic tourist board.
The tax hike, adding an extra DKK 50 per passenger, aims to mitigate the environmental impact of booming cruise tourism, redirecting funds to improve harbors and support communities.
Helene Steffersen from Visit Greenland highlighted the industry’s diverse views on cruise sizes and taxes but emphasized their united goal of sustainability. This move not only promises economic benefits but also fosters cultural preservation and environmental protection, showcasing Greenland’s commitment to responsible tourism.
