Greystones’ smartphone ban: A town’s success story inspires national guidelines

In a triumph for Greystones, Ireland, the town’s pioneering ‘no-smartphone code’ has not only eased the daily struggle for parents but has also gained government approval. Launched eight months ago, the voluntary pact among parents and teachers has become a local norm, reducing peer pressure around smartphone ownership.

Now, Irish ministers are considering nationwide guidelines and even a ban on selling smartphones to primary school children. Headteacher Rachel Harper believes they’ve set a positive example, stating, “It’s nice to be an ambassador in a positive way.”
