The Ocean Cleanup project, created by Dutch teenager Boyan Slat, has made a significant breakthrough.
On September 9th, their vessel, System 001, set sail from San Francisco Bay.
After traveling 350 nautical miles, it began final tests on September 19th.
Nicknamed “Wilson,” the vessel is set to tackle the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Early tests have shown success, and the team expects to finish testing within a week.
Once ready, Wilson will journey 1,000 nautical miles to the patch.
The organization is confident this technology can clean the trash island, which is twice the size of Texas.
