UN watchdog inches closer to greenlighting deep-sea mining in 2024, boosting prospects for the energy transition

Exciting developments in the deep-sea mining industry are on the horizon, with the UN-backed regulator making significant progress towards its regulation. The Council of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) has decided to delay immediate mining, as expected, but has kept the door open for potential start-up next year, providing a ray of hope for the industry’s proponents.

Despite concerns about environmental impact and insufficient research, Canada’s The Metals Company (TMC.O) remains confident that mining will soon support the energy transition in a more sustainable manner. With the finish line in sight, the next meeting in November 2023 promises to bring consolidated regulatory advancements.
