In a remarkable feat, Langholm, Scotland, transformed its fortunes through community spirit. When the Duke of Buccleuch put up moorland for sale, locals, led by Margaret Pool and the Langholm Initiative, seized a golden opportunity.
Overcoming financial challenges, they secured 5,200 acres for the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve. With backing from environmental groups and a last-minute rescue from the Woodland Trust, the town embraced rewilding and purchased an additional 5,300 acres. Now, as Langholm thrives, optimism reigns, symbolized by a specially penned song: “It’s oor muir noo!”
