California’s canal-spanning solar panels: A water saving clean energy revolution

In an inspiring collaboration, Solar AquaGrid, UC Merced, Turlock Irrigation District, and the California Department of Water Resources have clinched the 2023 Gizmodo Science Fair award. Their groundbreaking project envisions covering California’s vast canal network with solar panels to conserve water and produce clean energy.

A 2021 study by UC Merced showed that this innovation could save an astounding 63 billion gallons of water annually. As two pilot sites prepare to launch, generating 5 megawatts of power, it’s clear that this venture holds immense promise for a greener, more sustainable California.
